Well. The hardware of the FS5000 is pretty nice. But the stock firmware is equally really horrible if you want to rely on the dose rate. CPM and CPS it gets right. But the dose convertion ratio is dependent on the CPM and varies (from my experimenations) from about 175 CPM per µS/h for low counts to 35 CPM per µS/h for high counts. Never have I experienced such an odd firmware. So whether it actually can go to 5 rads is anybodyes guess. But it can be fixed. Just install Rad Pro on it. Rad Pro will alert user if tube become saturated (doesn't say at approx which level for which tube though). With stock firmware I got 31 µS/h from a steel box with a bunch of nano wands - pretty far out. My GQ GMC-300 says about 8 and Better Geiger S-1 (scintillation) says (from memory) 5-6. About no beta escapes from box but the GQ is adjusted for Cs-137. With Rad Pro the FS5000 also settled around 8 and gone are the variable fantasy world convertion ratios.

@@HifiCentret I wouild only be using the FS5000 to monitor radiation if there were a nuke attack. As long as it has the ability to accurately measure current radiation levels, im fine keeping track of dose rates, by simply using my wrist watch. From your tests, the bosean fs5000 is fairly accurate in measuring real time radiation levels ?

​@@davehimlin2374 It's only "accurate" around normal ambiant radiation levels (background radiation). About matter what you throw at it at above 1-2 µS/h with original firmware it's wildly exaggerating actual dose rate. At 19 cpm (regular background for a J321 tube) it showed 0,11 µS/h (173 cpm/µS/h conversion rate). At 210 cpm it showed 2,1 µS/h (100 cpm/µS/h conversion rate). At 1101 cpm it showed 31,7 µS/h (35 cpm/µS/h conversion rate) - at 1101 cpm dose rate for J321 tube should be 6,96 µS/h if referencing Cs-137 and 13,76 µS/h if referencing Co-60 - but as you can clearly see it shows way above those numbers. I have done a lot more points but these speak for themselves. Sure it shows you there's radiation and since it show the CPM and it appears to be correct - at least at the levels I'm able to put it at well then you can always calculate dose rate yourself. But really it shouldn't be so. As said - just install Rad Pro firmware on it and don't look back. There's videos on Rad Pro firmware here on youtube as well. Or you could just get another geiger. GQ GMC-300S is what I'd recommend to beginners that don't want to fuss around and don't want all the quircks and bugs of chinese geigers (not needing alpha or way outside their price range)..

If I touch a scope or DMM probe to the Anode connection, it registers counts (from the noise induced by brushing the probe on the Anode), and will alarm if it registers enough counts, so I believe the answer to be Yes. However, there is still the issue of the false counts, so I doubt it would be very accurate unless the real counts were high enough to make the fake counts statistically insignificant. But in that case, I don't think I'd stand around contemplating it.

@@CarCynic false counts could be interferences or something caused by having a fake tube across the contacts, I've even seen a comment stating that they used car lightbulbs as a tube in one of the units. Maybe they go away by putting a proper tube. I'm tempted to buy one and try it hahah

I showed someone the disassembled unit as shown in the video. This person has extensive experience in nuclear power, and radiation detection. He independently stated that the tube in this device is not a Geiger tube. We agree that it is most likely a Xeon flash tube.

The cheapest GQ you can find. There's often great deals on them on Amaz... No bugs and quircks unlike way too many of the Chinese ones. And they're not really that much more expensive than the better Chinese. Those you can find significantly cheeper on China sites - well quality is thereafter and while hardware may be decent firmware is often not and have unbelievable bugs and limitations. Often in contradiction to their stated specs - simply doesn't live up to their stated specs. Some show fantasy values others again doesn't record correct dose while showing correct dose rate. Some max out way before promized max, readings while about true jump around a lot and so.

The detector is located approximately under the round accumulated dose LCD dial on the left side of the watch as you look at the face. The stainless steel case does block most alpha and beta particles, but Gramma rays are not stopped by the front or the case.

Those Mobile phone detectors are just semiconductor gamma sensors. The PM-1208(M) contains an actual Geiger tube. It is also self powered (2032 Battery lasts for nearly a year). It is durable and water proof. In an actual survival situation I would *much* rather have my PM -1208M than rely on a mobile phone (perhaps 1 - 2 days of charge) and a plastic "dongle". Note that in a fallout situation, the slow response of the PM-1208 would not be an issue. If you enter an area with more or less contamination, the PM-1208 will react within a few minutes.

Thank you for your comment. After making this video, I discovered that this cell checker has 1 bad input. Cell 6 always reads low. For 6S batteries I use one of the common vertically oriented 2-6S LCD checkers. Both are still right here by my charging area, and as long as I am not flying something with a 6S battery, I tend to just grab either one on my way to the flying field.

Since the introduction of LHM (and later, LHS ) the Citroen Hydraulic suspension is very reliable. It got a bad reputation early on when they attempted to use brake fluid, and just because it was different. LHM has excellent corrosion protection, and if kept clean, the later Citroen hydraulic system is basically unaffected by time. I've had 3 LHM Citroens for a cumulative 20+ years, and I have never had a significant hydraulic problem, and never replaced a major hydraulic component.

Thanks. The Many of the CX Turbos (including this Prestige) originally came with Michelin TRX Wheels/Tires. Since I actually drove my CX, I converted it to the Alfa Romeo Rims and "normal" tires. I still have the Original TRX rims, and 2 sets of TRX tires -- those interested in a set of original Citroen TRX rims may want to keep thier eyes on a "certain popular auction site".

Because of the wonder of the internet, I can easily buy parts from Europe. The fuel injection system is standard BOSCH, so many parts are identical to BMW, Volvo, etc. of the same vintage. Other parts are substituted, for example the alternator has been upgraded to a higher capacity Mitsubishi part. Note: The CarCynic no longer owns this car.

Yeah, I actually was right in the audio track, and _not_ the caption I inserted. This counter uses a variant of the SBM-20 tube (SBM-20U, I believe). It does not have a "window" to detect alpha particles. That said, finding an strictly alpha source would be very unusual. The decay chain of most radioactive elements is going to involve multiple steps, with different steps producing different particles. One might say "But wait... Radium is an alpha source!". That's true, but in any real sample of Radium, some will have decayed into Polonium, which further decays by emitting beta particles. The same is true for Uranium, and Yes, even Americium. In any real sample, all stages of decay will be happening simultaneously. I can assure you that the Rodnik 3 detects antique clocks that contain radium. If you are in some sort of lab environment where there could be an actual strict alpha source, you probably are not looking for a device like the Rodnik-3.

No, not at all. The radiation level from that rock -- that close -- is similar to what a passenger on a typical commercial aircraft flight experiences. The watch would react long before the flight got to cruising altitude. People fly 8 hour plus flights (think about pilots and flight attendants), and their hair does not fall out. Thank you for the comment. The MTM Special Ops RAD Watch (mentioned in the 1st video) does feature tritium illuminated hands. Given the style and quality, I think it fits what you describe. And yes, I say that because I want them to send me a free one, but also because it's true, and I really don't think anyone will ever make something better in terms of quality, style and functionality.

Correct. If you were exposed to 4Sv/h for 15 minutes (1 Sv total), you would probably survive (especially with medical treatment), but your lunch would probably not stay with you. I speculate that some of the advertising is based on stories from Chernobyl where the dose rates were exceeding the range of the meters they had on hand immediately after the explosion. The implication is that you won't be in that situation if you buy the advertised product. It also is to show that the device can tolerate more than the wearer. At much higher dose rates, it really doesn't matter.

​@@CarCynic I wrote an email to MTM and it turns out the dose rates on the website where wrong. The dose rate only goes up to 4 mSv/h. Just like in the data sheet for the Polimaster you have in this video. The tritium tubes are much smaller than other brands like Luminox and Marathon use on theirs. People report them, as well as the digital backlight to be very dim. The new digital only Polimaster watches go up to 10Sv/h. I'm definitely interested in how future watches might integrate that into an everyday watch.

It really does not matter. The purpose of a Gamma Detector watch (Polimaster or MTM) is to alert the wearer of an anomalous exposure. Perhaps it should just display "Get Out of Here and Tell Someone with a Real Geiger Counter". 4 mSv/h is still 40000 times background (for most people), and 4 times the *annual maximum* in just an hour. Watches are great as an alerting device, or for routine exposure tracking (with appropriate software). They are not meant to function as or replace actual dosimeters in an emergency. This is not a "knock" against any of these devices, but actual releases or contamination should be handled by appropriate authorities with appropriate equipment.

Thank You for subscribing. As I mention in the review (linked above), the Ideal Ratio Rodnik 3: "...is, in my opinion, a better choice than the Soeks 112...". I rarely use my Soeks 112. I do however see that I have gotten more than one such request, I may do a comparison with the Rodnik 3, and yes, I could include the Terra-P as a better-known reference. I also have a 2 part review of an even more interesting radiation detecting device coming soon.
